US President Barack Obama has urged CORD leader Raila Odinga to cooperate with the government ahead of the 2017 elections.
In a message delivered by US Secretary of State John Kerry during a meeting at the Villa Rosa Kempinski Hotel, Nairobi, Obama urged the Opposition to work with the ruling party in ensuring the country goes through a peaceful election next year.
Kerry said that Obama was not impressed by the recent chaotic street demonstrations by the Opposition which was demanding the disbandment of the current electoral body.
“He was clear that the United States wanted free, fair and transparent elections conducted in a peaceful manner. He made it clear that they do not want a recurrence of violence like it was in 2007,”a source who attended the meeting told the Daily Nation.
The Opposition was further urged to support a report by the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee on electoral reforms by the two groups, arguing it would lead to peace and stability.
“Mr Kerry urged the leaders to support the proposed electoral reforms in the report by the joint select committee. His message was that the report was a product of both political sides and should be supported in full,” another source revealed.
Kerry concluded by saying Obama did not want to witness a repeat of the post-election violence that happened in 2007.
The three CORD principals, Amani Coalition leader Musalia Mudavadi and Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua had been invited to the meeting.
The US pledged Sh2.5 Billion to help in civic education as Kenya heads towards the General Election.
